Fitting a ceiling light: checks before you start

A ceiling light may look right above your dining table while needing a different fixing or electrical connection from the fitting already there. Check the weight, ceiling construction and manufacturer's instructions before taking the old light down. This also helps you avoid buying connectors and fixings that you will not use.

What this guide covers

You can gather the information below without exposing wiring. Electrical connection needs someone who can assess the installation, isolate it safely and verify the completed work. Where the manufacturer requires installation by an electrician, follow that requirement.

Stop if there is brittle insulation, heat damage, unidentified wiring, uncertain supply isolation or missing protective earthing required by the fitting. A heavy chandelier, a bathroom fitting or a new lighting point also needs a separate assessment.

You can gather the information below without exposing wiring. Electrical connection needs someone who can assess the installation, isolate it safely and verify the completed work. Where the manufacturer requires installation by an electrician, follow that requirement.

Check the fitting and its support

Find the exact model number and download the installation instructions. Record the weight, mounting points, canopy dimensions and whether the light source is replaceable. A fitting with integrated LEDs has different maintenance arrangements from one that takes a separate E27 bulb.

Check its protection class as well. The appearance of a metal or plastic housing does not establish the electrical protection it needs. EGLO, for example, provides the protection class and instructions for each fitting. If the label or instructions are missing, have suitability checked before buying or installing it.

Measure the proposed position and hanging height. Will the canopy cover the ceiling opening? Could the pendant swing into a door or cabinet? Do not assume a plastic box lid, an old hook or existing screw holes can carry a different fitting. Hollow plasterboard and concrete require different fixing assessments.

Prepare the job in five steps

  1. Keep the product information together. Save the instructions and photograph the rating label while it is accessible.
  2. Inspect what is visible. Note cracks, discolouration, loose parts or an unstable fixing without opening a wiring enclosure.
  3. Record the position. Make a dimensioned sketch. Have concealed services and the supporting structure assessed before drilling.
  4. Define the scope. Distinguish replacement at the existing point from moving the light, adding a dimmer or repairing the ceiling.
  5. Agree the final checks. Mechanical security, electrical protection and operation need checking before the fitting goes back into use.

Turning the wall switch off is not a complete safe-isolation procedure. The person making the connection must identify the correct supply, prevent reconnection and establish that the relevant conductors are dead using suitable equipment. The Fluke two-pole tester instructions describe model-specific checks and limitations. Buying a tester does not supply the knowledge needed to use it safely.

Build a materials list for this fitting

ItemQuantity and selection
Light fitting and installation instructionsOne for each planned lighting point; check what comes in the box.
Replaceable bulbs, if neededMatch the fitting's socket type, permitted load and number of lamp holders.
Mounting bracket, screws and wall plugsAs required by the fitting and verified ceiling construction.
Stable access and separate task lightingSuitable for the height and reach, including while the supply is isolated.
Connection materialsOnly where required, selected for the actual conductors and enclosure.
Isolation, test and hand toolsSelected by the person carrying out the electrical work.

You can compare replacement bulbs in GAMMA's lighting range. Toolstation lists plugs supplied with matching screws, but the linked size is an example. Your ceiling and fitting determine the required fixing.

Check supplied parts before ordering extras. Keep decorative pieces separate from electrical components while unpacking, and retain any warning labels or small mounting instructions supplied inside the packaging.

Conditions that need an electrician's assessment

Stop if there is brittle insulation, heat damage, unidentified wiring, uncertain supply isolation or missing protective earthing required by the fitting. A heavy chandelier, a bathroom fitting or a new lighting point also needs a separate assessment.

Photographs of the old connection can record what was present, but cannot prove it was correct. Wire colours alone cannot confirm the function or safety of an existing conductor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse the old screws?

Only after checking their condition, the supporting material, the new load and the fitting's instructions. Matching screw-hole spacing is not enough.

Should I buy a pack of connectors first?

Wait until the type, quantity and available enclosure space are known. WAGO's 221 family includes different versions; selection depends on the actual conductors.

What should I include in an enquiry?

The fitting's model, weight, desired position and a photograph of the visible existing light help. Do not expose electrical parts to take a photograph.

Would you like CAS to fit the light? Describe the job to CAS Elektrotechniek, including whether you already have the fitting and whether the lighting point will remain in the same place.

Prepare an enquiry

Uncertain information stays unknown. This checklist gives no safety score and sends nothing. After checking, copy only what you want to share with CAS. In the event of fire or immediate danger, move to safety and call 112. Do not wait for a reply to a form submission.

Worked example and formula

Task: extra socket. Room: study. Supply: unknown. Request an assessment; the list does not approve an installation.
