What this guide covers
This guide covers a user-replaceable bulb in an undamaged light, such as a table lamp. Connecting a ceiling fitting, changing a dimmer and repairing an integrated LED module require a different approach. Stop if the lampholder is loose, insulation is cracked, there are scorch marks or the bulb has broken. Keep away from damaged parts.

Match the bulb before comparing the price
Look for the fitting code, such as E27, E14 or GU10. Then check the supply voltage and available space inside the shade. Similar-looking spotlights can have different connections. Lumens describe light output, watts describe power consumption and kelvin describes light colour. Around 2700 K usually gives a warm white appearance. A higher kelvin value does not automatically mean more light. Milieu Centraal's bulb guide.
Read the application restrictions as well. A bulb intended for an open fitting is not automatically suitable for an enclosed shade. Compare the LED's actual wattage with the fitting's limit; ‘replaces 60 W’ is a light-output comparison. With spotlights, consider the beam angle: a narrow beam lights a small area, while a wider beam covers more of the surroundings.
For dimming, check the exact bulb and dimmer combination against the manufacturers' compatibility information. A dimmable bulb can still work poorly with an existing dimmer. A 12 V halogen system may also have a power supply that does not suit an LED replacement. Do not pull down the ceiling fitting to investigate it. Milieu Centraal on efficient lighting.
Your shopping and equipment list
| Item | Quantity | Selection check |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible LED bulb | 1 for each replacement | Fitting, voltage, actual W, lumens, kelvin, size and permitted fitting type |
| Phone or notebook | 1 | Record accessible markings and any dimmer information already available |
| Tape measure | 1 if needed | Measure clearance without putting anything into the lampholder |
| Stable stepladder | Only if needed | Reach the bulb comfortably; do not use a chair |
| Dry cloth | 1 | Handle the bulb once it has cooled |
There is no need to buy wire strippers, installation cable or electrical connectors for this task. Compare suitable bulbs at GAMMA (SUP-001) and HORNBACH (SUP-018). These are category links, so check each product against your list. Prices and availability may change.
Replace the bulb without opening the fitting
- Read the light's bulb-replacement instructions. For a plug-in lamp, switch it off, unplug it and allow the bulb to cool. For a fixed light, follow its user-replacement procedure. If the procedure is unclear or exposes wiring or terminals, arrange an assessment.
- Position the stepladder securely. Remove only the parts intended for user bulb replacement. Keep your fingers and tools out of the lampholder.
- Remove the old bulb without forcing it. Fit the new one using the method for that fitting. Stop if a retaining ring or bulb is stuck.
- Refit the shade or retaining ring before switching on. Check that the light is steady. Switch off if there is crackling, a burning smell or flickering; do not keep trying different settings.
Keep the packaging until you have checked the colour and brightness in the room. Take unwanted LED bulbs to a separate electrical recycling collection point. Milieu Centraal's disposal advice.
Worked example: replacing 6 bulbs
Suppose 6 suitable 5 W LEDs replace 6 bulbs rated at 40 W, with 3 hours of use each day. The calculated saving is:
6 × (40 − 5) ÷ 1000 × 3 × 365 = 229.95 kWh a year.
At an example electricity rate of €0.30 per kWh, that is approximately €69 a year. Enter your own bulb ratings, usage and tariff in the calculator. This estimate excludes purchase costs, dimming and any standby consumption of a separate power supply. It is not a promise about your electricity bill.
Common questions
Can I choose more lumens with the same fitting? Only if the voltage, dimensions, actual wattage and fitting restrictions also match. Consider whether extra brightness will be comfortable in that location.
Why does the new LED flicker? An incompatible dimmer or power supply is one possibility; a fault is another. Have persistent flickering investigated without opening or tightening electrical connections yourself.
Do I need to replace every bulb at once? Start with one compatible bulb in a frequently used location. Judge its light before buying a larger pack.
For awkward fittings, dimmer problems or a different lighting layout, discuss your lighting with CAS Elektrotechniek. Send the bulb model and a general photograph without removing covers. Ask for the completion checks and warranty arrangements to be explained in the quotation.

Compare LED energy savings
Check base, lumens, dimensions and dimming separately. This simple comparison excludes lifespan, maintenance and future tariffs. Zero or negative savings give no positive payback.
Worked example and formula
5 × 40 W replaced by 5 × 5 W, 3 h/day, 365 days and €0.30/kWh: 191.625 kWh and €57.49 saved per year. With €25 purchase cost: about 0.4 years.
saved kWh = (old W − new W) × quantity × hours × days / 1000; payback = purchase EUR / positive annual saving EUR

Compare labelled light output
Lumens do not establish adequate room lighting. Beam, placement, reflectance, glare and daylight matter. Efficacy is unavailable at zero watts.
Worked example and formula
3 lamps rated 470 lm and 4.5 W: total 1410 lm and 104.4 lm/W.
total lm = lm × quantity; lm/W = labelled lm / input W
