Fitting a complete LED strip kit: measure, choose and mount

An LED strip beneath a shelf or behind furniture can make a dark corner more useful. Much of the work happens before peeling off the backing: deciding where the power supply goes, routing the cable and checking that the strip fits without sharp bends.

What this guide covers

For this approach, choose a complete kit with its matching plug-in adaptor, controller and factory connectors. The scope is a dry indoor space without changes to fixed wiring. Separate power supplies with exposed terminals, soldering, bathroom locations and positions close to a hob are outside this task.

The chosen product's instructions determine whether cutting is allowed, where cuts may be made and how an end must be finished. This general guide does not provide a cutting interval or a connection recipe for spare pieces. Where possible, plan a route suited to an unchanged kit. Confirm any length adjustment before buying. Read the kit instructions and inspect the parts. Do not use a damaged strip or adaptor. Lay the strip along the proposed route as permitted by the manufacturer. Use only its intended user connectors. Test the complete kit according to the instructions before fixing it; do not light it while coiled unless expressly permitted. Unplug the mains adaptor before moving parts, attaching the strip or changing connections. Philips Hue also includes unplugging in its fitting guidance. Philips Hue installation advice. Prepare the surface. Fix the strip without piercing it, sharply folding it or trapping it. Keep leads away from hinges and sliding drawers. Connect the completed kit and choose a comfortable brightness. Stop if there is a smell, abnormal heat, flickering or a damaged connection. Can I use any 24 V adaptor? No. Voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Use the supplied adaptor or an expressly approved replacement.

For this approach, choose a complete kit with its matching plug-in adaptor, controller and factory connectors. The scope is a dry indoor space without changes to fixed wiring. Separate power supplies with exposed terminals, soldering, bathroom locations and positions close to a hob are outside this task.

Measure the light and supply routes separately

Draw the line where you want the light, then measure it. Separately measure from the existing socket to the proposed adaptor and controller location. The illuminated strip length is different from the connecting cable length.

Check the position from normal sitting and standing heights. Will you see bright individual points from the sofa? Adjust the line so you mainly see the surface being lit. Keep the adaptor accessible with the clearance required by its instructions. Do not bury it in insulation or hide it in a sealed compartment without permitted ventilation.

Photograph the furniture and record its surface before shopping. Rough timber, dust and flaking paint behave differently from a smooth panel. Any mounting channel needs to suit the strip, including its heat-dissipation requirements.

Extension capability depends on the model

Check the exact model and generation. Philips Hue's general fitting advice discusses cutting and extending, but those options do not apply to every product. Its 5-metre Hue Solo is listed as cuttable and not extendable. An extension sharing the brand name is therefore not enough to establish compatibility. Philips Hue Solo 5-metre specifications.

The chosen product's instructions determine whether cutting is allowed, where cuts may be made and how an end must be finished. This general guide does not provide a cutting interval or a connection recipe for spare pieces. Where possible, plan a route suited to an unchanged kit. Confirm any length adjustment before buying.

Test the layout before fixing it

  1. Read the kit instructions and inspect the parts. Do not use a damaged strip or adaptor.
  2. Lay the strip along the proposed route as permitted by the manufacturer. Use only its intended user connectors. Test the complete kit according to the instructions before fixing it; do not light it while coiled unless expressly permitted.
  3. Unplug the mains adaptor before moving parts, attaching the strip or changing connections. Philips Hue also includes unplugging in its fitting guidance. Philips Hue installation advice.
  4. Prepare the surface. Fix the strip without piercing it, sharply folding it or trapping it. Keep leads away from hinges and sliding drawers.
  5. Connect the completed kit and choose a comfortable brightness. Stop if there is a smell, abnormal heat, flickering or a damaged connection.

Worked example for the material planner

A cabinet needs a light line of 2.4 m plus 1.6 m, totalling 4.0 m. The separate route to the socket measures 1.2 m. Record 4.0 m of desired lighting and a 1.2 m supply route. Adding them together to buy a 5.2 m strip would describe the wrong requirement.

The planner stores measurements and rounds pack quantities. It does not confirm power-supply sizing or cutting rules. A 5 m pack is useful only if the product rules and layout accommodate it. Do not deal with extra length by overlapping or coiling the strip.

Choose the right planning tool

Use Route length with two separate material lines: 4.0 m for the light and 1.2 m for the supply route. The planner retains both measurements separately; it does not choose a suitable kit. Pack counting applies only to counts of compatible accessories, such as fixing clips. It does not divide a strip into pieces or create a cutting plan.

The separate LED strip power explanation shows the relationship between length and stated power per metre. For example, 4 m × 9.6 W/m = 38.4 W. This is an illustrative calculation, not a specification of the kits linked above or a reason to replace their supplied adaptors. The manufacturer-matched combination and maximum length still control a complete-kit installation.

Common questions

Can I use any 24 V adaptor? No. Voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Use the supplied adaptor or an expressly approved replacement.

Do I need an aluminium channel? That depends on the strip, surface and manufacturer instructions. A suitable channel may also keep individual light points out of sight.

Can this strip go outside? Only if the entire combination and installation position are permitted for outdoor use. This indoor approach does not cover wet areas or gardens.

For a fixed supply, several light lines or a difficult location, send your lighting plan to CAS Elektrotechniek. Include measurements and product names so the arrangement can be discussed before purchase.

Materials and specifications

Before buying, check that the size, type and specification suit your installation. Use the article list and tools to work out the quantities you need.

Complete LED strip kit

Tape measure and plan

One tape measure and current plan
Specification
Survey accessible surfaces only; measurements do not establish electrical suitability.

Manuals and model details

Quantity and unit
One current manual per exact product
Specification
Use exact model/revision, with conflicting instructions unresolved until manufacturer/installer clarification.

Plan route quantities

Keep each material, colour and cross-section separate. Specification is still required. A total is not a cutting plan, continuous reel length or conduit-fill calculation. Allowances and contingency are your planning choices, not installation rules.

Worked example and formula

4.2 + 2.8 + 1.5 m plus two 0.3 m allowances = 9.1 m. With a user-chosen 10% contingency: 10.01 m. A 4 m light line and 1.2 m supply route stay separate.

planned m = (sum of measured m + explicit allowances m) × (1 + contingency / 100)

Count retail packs

Enter only confirmed compatible, usable stock. Check the actual pack contents; connector positions are not pack quantities. Calculate each variant separately. This is not a cutting plan.

Worked example and formula

17 units required, 2 compatible units owned, 10 per pack: 2 packs, 20 purchased and 5 remaining.

needed = max(0, required − usable owned); packs = ceil(needed / pack size)

Calculate LED kit power

Only for a manufacturer-approved DC kit up to 60 V; excludes mains strips and constant-current systems. Enter utilisation only when the exact manual specifies it. This does not approve an adapter, controller, connector or run length.

Worked example and formula

4 m × 9.6 W/m = 38.4 W; at 24 V that is 1.6 A. Only with documented utilisation of 0.8: a calculated power supply rating of 48 W, without product approval.

W = m × W/m; A = W / V; arithmetic supply W = W / documented utilisation
