Consumer unit and earthing · Prepare for your electrician

Earthing in an older Dutch home: what can you check?

The metal earth contacts on a socket show how the accessory is made. They do not prove that a suitable protective conductor is connected behind the wall. After several renovations, a home may contain different generations of electrical installation.

What this guide covers

To establish whether the earthing is adequate, arrange electrical measurements. Liander identifies this as work for an installer. You can prepare useful information and report visible problems without opening sockets or the consumer unit. Liander: earthing and RCDs.

Do not touch a suspect appliance again to reproduce a symptom. Record what has already happened. If you rent the property, report the concern to your landlord as well. Have earth electrodes, protective conductors, bonding components and protective devices specified from the assessment. Do not link neutral and earth yourself or improvise an earth connection to a radiator, tap or water pipe. If a sealed part of the electricity connection must be opened, network-operator authorisation applies. Stedin explains this as zegelrecht. Do not assume every installer has that authority, and do not break a seal yourself. Stedin: seal authorisation. When should I stop using the affected equipment? Stop after a shock or tingling sensation, or if there is a burning smell, smoke, visible damage or moisture near electrical parts. Keep people away and call 112 for immediate danger.

To establish whether the earthing is adequate, arrange electrical measurements. Liander identifies this as work for an installer. You can prepare useful information and report visible problems without opening sockets or the consumer unit. Liander: earthing and RCDs.

Earthing and bonding are protective measures

Protective conductors form part of the measures against electric shock. Bonding limits unwanted voltage differences between certain conductive parts. The required connections and their relationship with protective devices depend on the installation.

A separate earth electrode or a length of green-yellow wire is therefore not a complete solution. The connections, installation characteristics and protective devices need to be assessed together.

An RCD has a different function from a protective conductor. Pressing its test button does not check that every socket has an adequate earth connection. Treat earthing and RCD protection as separate elements of the assessment.

What the age of the property can tell you

The construction date gives historical context, but the wiring may have been changed much later. Look for invoices, drawings, inspection reports and information about kitchen or bathroom renovations.

IPLO explains that existing buildings have an older baseline and later installations must satisfy the requirements applicable when they were installed. A reference to an old standard is not permission to remove more recent protective measures. IPLO: Bbl and housing.

A 1960s home with a newer kitchen and extension therefore needs an assessment of the relevant parts. Neither “the house is old” nor “the consumer unit is new” describes the condition of the whole installation.

Make a room-by-room record

Walk through the home without dismantling electrical equipment. Keep a simple list.

RecordExample
Room and pointKitchen socket beside the fridge.
Visible conditionEarth contacts visible or absent; damaged or intact.
Connected equipmentMake and model of an appliance you are concerned about.
Known alterationsKitchen replaced in a known year; documents available.
SymptomsTripping, discolouration, a loose cover or an electric shock.

Do not touch a suspect appliance again to reproduce a symptom. Record what has already happened. If you rent the property, report the concern to your landlord as well.

Use the quote checklist to separate existing concerns from proposed additions. A record of ten sockets is an inventory; it does not establish that other parts of the home are safe.

Agree what the assessment should cover

Explain why you want an inspection: uncertainty about earthing, a planned kitchen installation or buying a property, for example. Let the electrician identify an appropriate scope.

Ask which parts will be examined, which measurements belong to that scope and how any limitations will be recorded. Afterwards, ask for the findings, recommended work and the verification results following repairs.

This helps avoid a mismatch between a small check and an expectation of assurance about the whole house. A report should identify what was assessed and which areas were inaccessible or outside the agreed scope.

You can also ask how the outcome affects your plans. A new appliance, a moved socket or a bathroom renovation may involve work beyond correcting the original concern.

Avoid buying a solution before the cause is known

For preparation, a room list, existing documents and model numbers are enough. Replacing an old socket with one that has visible earth contacts does not itself add a protective conductor.

Frequently asked questions

Can a plug-in socket tester provide certainty? A basic tester can indicate some faults. It does not replace an assessment of the complete protective measures.

Does all old wiring need immediate replacement? The construction date alone cannot answer that. Condition, applicable requirements and planned alterations need assessment.

When should I stop using the affected equipment? Stop after a shock or tingling sensation, or if there is a burning smell, smoke, visible damage or moisture near electrical parts. Keep people away and call 112 for immediate danger.

Discuss your concerns with CAS

Send CAS Elektrotechniek your room list and available documents. Explain whether you need an existing problem investigated or are preparing a renovation. Ask about an installation assessment.

Prepare an enquiry

Uncertain information stays unknown. This checklist gives no safety score and sends nothing. After checking, copy only what you want to share with CAS. In the event of fire or immediate danger, move to safety and call 112. Do not wait for a reply to a form submission.

Worked example and formula

Task: extra socket. Room: study. Supply: unknown. Request an assessment; the list does not approve an installation.

In the event of fire or immediate danger: move to safety and call 112.

If there are electric shocks, smoke, arcing or water near electrical parts: stop using the equipment, keep clear and obtain appropriate help. Do not wait for a web form.
