Electrical renovation: prepare a useful scope of work

“Renew the electrics” may describe one room or much of a home. A clear scope makes quotations easier to compare. You do not need to design the electrical installation: describe what you want to use, where it belongs and the building work planned around it.

What this guide covers

“Renew the electrics” may describe one room or much of a home. A clear scope makes quotations easier to compare. You do not need to design the electrical installation: describe what you want to use, where it belongs and the building work planned around it.

Have one current floor plan, point schedule, appliance list and outline programme ready for the first discussion. Include relevant landlord or homeowners' association arrangements. A tape measure and notes are enough; do not open enclosures to fill gaps in the information.

Work room by room

List lighting points, controls, sockets, fixed equipment and likely future needs. Say whether each existing point stays, moves or is removed. Give positions useful references on the floor plan, such as kitchen K1 or study W1.

Separate wishes from observations. “Add a desk socket” is a wish. “Existing outlet has no visible earth contacts” is an observation; it establishes nothing about concealed wiring. Have defects assessed rather than treating your survey as proof of safety.

For an example room, three new double sockets, one light point and two control positions describe user functions. They are not a universal parts order. The chosen range may require separate mechanisms, frames, boxes and fixings.

The preparation tool records location, function, existing or new, finish, appliance model and unresolved questions. Pack rounding can help once a parts list is specified. It cannot design wiring or derive circuit count from socket count.

Assign responsibility for materials

Separate installation components, decorative items you select and equipment supplied by the kitchen company or builder. Where known, record the exact brand, range and model. Accept substitutes only after suitability is confirmed.

Supplying your own items may suit an agreed arrangement. Clarify who resolves missing or unsuitable parts, whether another visit may be needed, and the warranty arrangements for material and workmanship. “Materials included” should have a clear meaning.

Put checks before finishes in the programme

Agree when routes and boxes remain accessible, when plastering or tiling starts and who confirms that areas may be closed. Verification must follow applicable requirements. IPLO explains the relationship between electrical installations and Dutch building rules; application to your alteration needs assessment.

Ask which records you will receive: updated circuit descriptions, agreed test or verification results, relevant product manuals and maintenance information. Photographs before finishing can help record routes, but cannot prove electrical safety.

Have one current floor plan, point schedule, appliance list and outline programme ready for the first discussion. Include relevant landlord or homeowners' association arrangements. A tape measure and notes are enough; do not open enclosures to fill gaps in the information.

Common questions

Can I chase walls or lay conduit myself?

Agree this before starting. Routes, structure, existing services, materials and inspection need to fit the execution plan. Work that has to be redone does not produce a saving.

Can I compare quotations by the final price alone?

Only when work, materials, making good, verification, waste removal and exclusions are comparable. Ask for missing items to be clarified.

What happens if my plans change?

Record the change before work proceeds, including cost and programme effects. Tell the electrician about changed appliance models before connections are made.

Discuss your renovation with CAS. A point schedule and programme provide a practical basis for agreeing the work.

Materials and specifications

Before buying, check that the size, type and specification suit your installation. Use the article list and tools to work out the quantities you need.

Tape measure and plan

Tape measure

Quantity and unit
One tape measure and current plan
Specification
Survey accessible surfaces only; measurements do not establish electrical suitability.

Manuals and model details

Quantity and unit
One current manual per exact product
Specification
Use exact model/revision, with conflicting instructions unresolved until manufacturer/installer clarification.

Prepare an enquiry

Uncertain information stays unknown. This checklist gives no safety score and sends nothing. After checking, copy only what you want to share with CAS. In the event of fire or immediate danger, move to safety and call 112. Do not wait for a reply to a form submission.

Worked example and formula

Task: extra socket. Room: study. Supply: unknown. Request an assessment; the list does not approve an installation.

Checklist only; no safety score or automatic submission

In the event of fire or immediate danger: move to safety and call 112.

If there are electric shocks, smoke, arcing or water near electrical parts: stop using the equipment, keep clear and obtain appropriate help. Do not wait for a web form.

Material budget

Use your own checked quantities and prices on the same VAT basis. Shipping is counted once per retailer basket. Unknown prices remain excluded, giving a partial total. This is not a checkout price or CAS quote.

Worked example and formula

2 × €4.95 + 1 × €12.50 + €4.95 shipping = €27.35 on the same VAT basis.

known total EUR = sum of packs × price per pack + shipping per actual basket
