Bathroom electrics in the Netherlands: plan lights, sockets and appliances

A lit mirror, a toothbrush socket and underfloor heating all need space in your bathroom plan. Plan the electrics before tiling starts and cables disappear behind finished surfaces. The positions of the bath and shower affect which electrical equipment can go where.

What this guide covers

For fixed bathroom installations, the room layout, protective measures and product instructions belong to the same design. You can collect the dimensions and decide what you want to use. Have the zones, connections and protection assessed before ordering electrical materials.

Also agree which preparatory work you can do. Do not cut channels or drill holes before hidden services, wall construction and the electrical route have been assessed. A change in shower position may require the electrical layout to be reviewed. What should I do if a tap or appliance gives a tingling sensation? Stop using it and keep people away from the affected area. Arrange urgent investigation. Call 112 for immediate danger or injury.

For fixed bathroom installations, the room layout, protective measures and product instructions belong to the same design. You can collect the dimensions and decide what you want to use. Have the zones, connections and protection assessed before ordering electrical materials.

Start with measured drawings

Draw the room from above and add a simple view of each wall. Include the bath, shower, fixed water outlets, partitions and ceiling height. A photograph alone rarely records all the relevant distances.

Then place your intended equipment on the drawings.

ItemInformation to record
Mirror or mirror cabinetDimensions, proposed position and exact model.
LightingLocations, mounting heights and whether you want dimming.
SocketsIntended use and preferred locations, pending design approval.
Extractor fanModel and preferred controls or run-on function.
HeatingType, rated power and thermostat position.
Washing machine or dryerModel, location and access.

Include future wishes while access is available. An agreed route can make a later addition easier, although any future connection will still need assessment.

Bathroom zones and IP ratings answer different questions

NEN 1010's bathroom provisions address zones, additional protection, bonding and the selection of equipment. NEN's presentation on section 701 outlines these subjects.

An IP code describes an enclosure's resistance to ingress. It does not, by itself, authorise a particular appliance in a particular zone. Equipment type, supply, mounting arrangements and manufacturer instructions also matter.

For example, Hager describes IP44 equipment for limited moisture exposure and occasional splashing. That description does not mean every IP44 item can be fitted beside any bath or shower. Hager: surface-mounted IP44 equipment.

Have the actual room geometry assessed. An online zone illustration may assume a different shower arrangement, edition of a standard or country. A retailer's “bathroom light” category is not a complete installation specification.

Include earthing and RCD protection in the design

The electrician assesses protective conductors, any required bonding, the supply and the protection of the affected circuits. An existing wire behind a mirror does not establish that the proposed mirror is suitable for that connection.

An RCD that responds to its test button also does not prove the whole bathroom installation safe. Liander distinguishes that user check from having the earthing measured by an installer. Liander: earthing and RCDs.

During renovation, keep existing bonding connections in place until their function has been assessed. This also applies when metal pipework is being replaced with plastic.

Make the shopping list specific

Separate the products you would like from the components that still depend on the electrical design.

Your room plan might specify 1 mirror cabinet, 2 wall lights and 1 fan. The suitable versions, cable routes, connection accessories, protective devices and positions must then be checked. Two lights do not necessarily need only two connectors.

Keep each product's installation instructions and model number. Ask the supplier about its permitted location, protection class, IP rating, supply and clearance requirements. For electric underfloor heating, ask which measurements and records the manufacturer requires before, during and after fitting.

A tape measure, drawings and product documents are enough for this preparation. Installation tools can wait until responsibility for the work has been agreed.

Agree the sequence before tiling

A practical sequence includes approving the point layout, coordinating the building work, installing to the agreed design, checking before parts are concealed and completing the final verification and documentation. Agree who owns each stage.

Also agree which preparatory work you can do. Do not cut channels or drill holes before hidden services, wall construction and the electrical route have been assessed. A change in shower position may require the electrical layout to be reviewed.

Access deserves space on the drawing too. Think about how a fan, transformer, driver or heating control can be inspected or replaced without unnecessary damage to the finished bathroom.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IP65 light go anywhere in a bathroom? No. Its IP rating is one characteristic. The complete product and its location must meet the installation conditions.

Can an existing socket stay where it is? Have it assessed against the proposed layout and work. Its current position is not automatic approval for the renovated room.

What should I do if a tap or appliance gives a tingling sensation? Stop using it and keep people away from the affected area. Arrange urgent investigation. Call 112 for immediate danger or injury.

Prepare an enquiry

Uncertain information stays unknown. This checklist gives no safety score and sends nothing. After checking, copy only what you want to share with CAS. In the event of fire or immediate danger, move to safety and call 112. Do not wait for a reply to a form submission.

In the event of fire or immediate danger: move to safety and call 112.

If there are electric shocks, smoke, arcing or water near electrical parts: stop using the equipment, keep clear and obtain appropriate help. Do not wait for a web form.
