What this guide covers
This guide helps with planning and mounting suitable battery alarms in an existing home. Existing mains alarms, alterations, new buildings and uses such as room-by-room rental may have different requirements. Do not replace a required mains alarm with a battery-only product on your own initiative. IPLO's explanation of Dutch smoke-alarm requirements.
Check the model, manufacture or replacement date and instructions. Confirm all planned locations before drilling or attaching anything. Use a mounting method permitted by the manufacturer. Before drilling, the location must be checked for hidden cables, pipes and other services. If the surface or route is uncertain, arrange installation. An adhesive mounting system is an option only where the alarm, fixing product and surface all permit it. Activate and mount the alarm according to its instructions. Leave sealed battery housings closed. For linked models, use the specified pairing procedure. Test with the test button as instructed. Do not use a candle, lighter or smoke from a fire. Follow the system's instructions when checking interconnected alarms. Record the model, location, installation date and replacement date. Keep the instructions somewhere every resident can find them. What if an alarm keeps beeping? Use its instructions to identify the signal safely and arrange correction or replacement. Do not leave the home unprotected to silence a nuisance signal. For a genuine smoke alarm, prioritise leaving the home and call 112 if there is a fire.

Start with floors and escape routes
The Dutch government describes an alarm on every floor as the general rule for homes. The detailed requirements depend on the dwelling and routes to the exit. Counting one alarm per storey does not establish complete compliance. For unusual layouts, open galleries or rented rooms, take the floor plan to someone who can assess the specific requirements. Rijksoverheid on home fire safety.
Brandweer Nederland advises ceiling placement, at least 50 cm from walls and corners, away from draughts and ventilation flows. Start by reviewing halls and landings. It also recommends linked alarms and attention to sleeping rooms. Sloping ceilings and unusual rooms need the exact product's placement instructions. Brandweer smoke-alarm guidance.
Consider the route with doors closed. Mark rooms where someone might not hear a warning clearly. A person with impaired hearing may need additional alerting equipment. A phone notification must not be the only way to warn someone inside the home.
Build a shopping list from the plan
| Item | Quantity | Selection criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable smoke alarm | 1 per confirmed location | CE marking and EN 14604 documentation; appropriate power source and linking capability |
| Battery | Only for a replaceable-battery model | Exact type specified in the instructions |
| Mounting plate or approved fixing kit | 1 per alarm | Suitable for both the alarm and mounting surface; avoid improvised tape |
| Stable stepladder | 1 if needed | Comfortable reach without stretching |
| Tape measure, pencil and floor plan | 1 set | Record locations and clearances |
| Calendar or maintenance sheet | 1 | Testing, cleaning and replacement dates |
Compare alarms at GAMMA (SUP-005) and BAUHAUS (SUP-023). The FireAngel FA6120-INT listed by BAUHAUS (SUP-024) is a battery alarm; separately decide whether your plan requires linking. The manufacturer's product page identifies the power source and test function. Unrelated products do not become an interconnected system merely because they share a radio feature.
Mount, activate and record
- Check the model, manufacture or replacement date and instructions. Confirm all planned locations before drilling or attaching anything.
- Use a mounting method permitted by the manufacturer. Before drilling, the location must be checked for hidden cables, pipes and other services. If the surface or route is uncertain, arrange installation. An adhesive mounting system is an option only where the alarm, fixing product and surface all permit it.
- Activate and mount the alarm according to its instructions. Leave sealed battery housings closed. For linked models, use the specified pairing procedure.
- Test with the test button as instructed. Do not use a candle, lighter or smoke from a fire. Follow the system's instructions when checking interconnected alarms.
- Record the model, location, installation date and replacement date. Keep the instructions somewhere every resident can find them.
Brandweer advises monthly testing and removal of dust. Follow the model's own maintenance instructions too. A test button checks functions of the alarm; location and whether residents can hear it remain separate considerations. Brandweer on maintenance and testing.
Common questions
Are 3 alarms enough for a 3-storey home? That is a starting count, not a completed design. Review escape routes, sleeping rooms, existing provision and applicable building requirements.
Does a smoke alarm detect carbon monoxide? Only if the product includes that function. CO detection also has different placement considerations. Brandweer on carbon monoxide.
What if an alarm keeps beeping? Use its instructions to identify the signal safely and arrange correction or replacement. Do not leave the home unprotected to silence a nuisance signal. For a genuine smoke alarm, prioritise leaving the home and call 112 if there is a fire.
For a placement assessment or replacement of mains-powered alarms, discuss your smoke alarms with CAS Elektrotechniek. A floor plan and photographs of closed alarms help with preparation.
