What this guide covers
You want to turn the bedroom light on at the door and off beside the bed. Begin with that requirement: one lighting function controlled from two positions. It gives an electrician or supplier more useful information than a photograph of a white switch. Do not remove a switch to count its wires. The electrician needs to identify conductor functions, assess the enclosure space and establish whether an alteration is possible. A smart switch or dimmer may require a neutral conductor or a particular load and control arrangement.

In the Netherlands, you will often see this arrangement called a hotelschakeling. The name describes the control arrangement. The front of a switch does not reliably identify the mechanism behind it, and similar rockers can perform different functions.
Understand the product names
| Dutch term | Intended function |
|---|---|
| Enkelpolige schakelaar | Switch a lighting function from one position. |
| Wisselschakelaars | Control one lighting function from two positions. |
| Kruisschakelaar | Add a control position between two two-way switches. |
| Serieschakelaar | Control two lighting functions separately at one position. |
| Drukknop | Send a control signal; the connected system determines the action. |
| Dimmer | Adjust the brightness of compatible lighting. |
Niko's switch and dimmer overview describes these functions. Use the terms to discuss the result you want. They do not provide a wiring diagram for an unknown installation.
A double rocker can also belong to different mechanisms. Do not assume a serieschakelaar and a dubbele wisselschakelaar offer identical control options because they look alike.
Make a control plan first
Walk through the room as you normally use it. Where do you enter? Which side of the bed needs a control? Should kitchen task lighting and dining-room lighting operate separately?
For each lighting function, record:
- the fitting or group of lights being controlled;
- the required control positions;
- whether you need switching, dimming or both;
- existing controls you want to retain;
- whether an app or remote control is wanted.
Use a practical description such as: “The ceiling light should switch on and off at the door and on the left side of the bed.” This is more useful than asking for a smart hotel circuit without describing how it should work.
Record what exists without opening it
Note what each visible switch currently does. Use only the normal controls of an undamaged installation. Mark the switches and lighting points with matching numbers on a room plan.

Include existing dimmers and lamps in the inventory. Record model numbers when you can find them without dismantling anything. Counting rockers does not replace this product information.
If a control behaves unpredictably, describe the symptom and when it occurs. Do not keep swapping components to find a working combination. The problem may be in the existing connection or in product compatibility.
Order parts after confirming the arrangement
| Item | When to specify it |
|---|---|
| Switch or push-button mechanism | After assessing the intended function and existing installation. |
| Rocker, centre plate and frame | Match the exact manufacturer, range and combination. |
| Recessed box or surface enclosure | Only if alteration is needed; confirm space and mounting requirements. |
| Dimmer or control module | As part of a verified lamp and control combination. |
| Conductors and connectors | Selected by the installer for the agreed arrangement. |
Keep the model numbers for each control position in the enquiry checklist. You can compare dimmer formats at GAMMA and electrical boxes at KARWEI. Confirm whether covers and frames are included before ordering.
Agree how the finished controls should work
Ask for a description of the intended operation and any limitations. Establish whether each control point offers the same functions, what works without an internet connection and whether daily use requires an app.
For smart products, retain owner access and the product instructions. Discuss what happens when a phone, router or controller is replaced. After alteration, both the electrical installation and the intended combinations of controls need checking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I identify a two-way switch from its front?
Usually not reliably. The mechanism and actual wiring determine its function. Similar rockers may fit several mechanisms.
Does hotelschakeling mean I need special hotel switches?
The term describes the arrangement. State the number of lighting functions and control positions in your enquiry; the installer can select the appropriate system.
Can I put any dimmer at each position?
No. The dimmers and any secondary controls must be designed for that arrangement and work together. Follow the chosen manufacturer's instructions.
Would you like more convenient lighting controls? Send CAS your control plan, including which existing switches you want to retain and what each position should do.
