What this guide covers
Replacing a recessed wall dimmer involves fixed wiring. You can gather product information and describe the operation you want. Have the technical choice and connection assessed before buying the components.
Stop using the affected lighting if there is a burning smell, crackling, visible damage or unusual heat. Do not remove the cover to adjust hidden controls. Any minimum-level adjustment must follow the product instructions and remain within safe user-accessible operation. Do not automatically buy a resistor, bypass or compensation module. These are not universal remedies. They need to suit the system and the identified problem.

Replacing a recessed wall dimmer involves fixed wiring. You can gather product information and describe the operation you want. Have the technical choice and connection assessed before buying the components.
Decide how you want to dim the lights
Some lamps need a compatible wall dimmer. Others have their own preset light levels or use smart controls. Philips distinguishes these arrangements in its LED guidance. A smart lamp that can change brightness is not automatically suitable behind an existing wall dimmer.
Record which controls you want to keep. Do you want a rotary control, operation from two positions or a remote? Start from that arrangement when comparing products. The word “dimmable” does not establish that two systems work together.
Gather five pieces of information
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact lamp or fitting model | A brand or product-family name is too broad for a compatibility check. |
| Actual input power | Use the LED wattage rather than “replaces 60 W”. |
| Number of light sources | A permitted combination may have a lamp-count limit as well as a power limit. |
| Driver or transformer, where fitted | This affects which control method is possible. |
| Dimmer model and intended controls | Needed to assess dimming method, connection and secondary control options. |
Collect labels you can read safely. If a model number is behind a fixed cover or inside an electrical box, leave identification to the installer.
Save the packaging or a photograph of the product label. Two bulbs with similar names can have different product codes, and a listing may change after you buy them.
Adding wattages is only part of the assessment
Six lamps rated at 4.5 W have a combined stated input of 27 W. That figure is useful in your appliance inventory. It does not prove that any dimmer labelled “150 W” will operate them correctly.
The applicable limit may depend on the load type, dimming method, surroundings and mounting arrangement. For example, the JUNG 1735DD instructions include model-specific load conditions, reductions and mounting requirements. Those conditions belong to that model.
Check the minimum load and starting behaviour too. A combination that works halfway through the adjustment range may still fail at its lowest setting. Use an up-to-date compatibility list where available. Philips links to suitable dimmer lists in its dimmable-lighting guidance.
Useful observations if the lights flicker
Record whether one lamp or every lamp is affected. Note whether the problem started after a replacement, occurs only at low brightness or returns at particular times. These details help the electrician narrow down the cause.
Confirm the shopping list
- A suitable dimmer, or another agreed solution for the desired controls.
- The correct knob, centre plate and frame if they are not supplied.
- The agreed number of compatible lamps, only where replacement is needed.
- Any secondary control specified for the chosen arrangement.
- Necessary connection or mounting parts selected by the installer.
You can compare dimmer formats at GAMMA and LED lamps at HORNBACH. Check the exact model and included finishing parts. A retailer category does not approve a combination.
Frequently asked questions
Does a universal dimmer work with every LED lamp?
No. Check the exact model's supported lamp types, conditions and tested combinations.
Can I use the incandescent-equivalent wattage?
Use the actual LED input power. The replacement figure compares light sources and is not the electrical load.
Can different LED lamps share a dimmer?
Have the combination assessed. Lamps from the same brand can still use different drivers, power ratings and dimming behaviour.

Appliances and simultaneous demand
Unknown power stays unknown. The known subtotal does not establish safe loading, circuits, phases, protection or cable size. Take the inventory to your electrician.
Worked example and formula
Kettle 2200 W + dishwasher 2000 W + microwave 1400 W = 5600 W (5.6 kW). This does not approve a circuit.
known W = sum of included known input W × count
