Choosing wire connectors: match the model to the conductor

A connector is small, but it needs to match the conductors and application precisely. The number of openings or colour of a lever is not enough to select it. Find the complete model number and check the manufacturer's information before ordering a pack.

What this guide covers

In Dutch shops, a joining connector is often described as a lasklem. You can inventory parts for an agreed job. Identifying, disconnecting and joining conductors in a fixed installation requires a competent person, safe isolation and verification of the completed work.

A multi-position connector can electrically join the inserted conductors together. Never assume that three openings provide separate terminals for line, neutral and protective earth. The internal connection and intended use must be understood first. Make sure the packaging and instructions refer to the same product. Buy from an identifiable seller and keep the model information. Do not reuse a damaged, distorted or unidentifiable connector from a box of mixed leftovers. There must also be adequate space for the connectors and conductors. A lid, suitable entries and any required strain relief belong in the assessment. Do not force extra connectors into a box because its cover can still be closed.

In Dutch shops, a joining connector is often described as a lasklem. You can inventory parts for an agreed job. Identifying, disconnecting and joining conductors in a fixed installation requires a competent person, safe isolation and verification of the completed work.

Start with the conductor

Solid, stranded and fine-stranded conductors are different selection categories. A connector suitable for one is not automatically suitable for another. Conductor material and cross-sectional area also matter.

WAGO describes different versions and applications within the 221 series. That information does not apply to every item sold under the WAGO name or every connector with a lever.

A shop may state “up to 4 mm²” while the detailed conditions differ by conductor type. The exact model's manufacturer data determines its permitted range. Also establish how many conductors the agreed design needs to join.

Openings do not form a wiring diagram

A multi-position connector can electrically join the inserted conductors together. Never assume that three openings provide separate terminals for line, neutral and protective earth. The internal connection and intended use must be understood first.

The number of connectors in an old installation is not a design specification either. Have unidentified connections, unexpected conductor colours or multiple circuits in the same area assessed before alteration. A photograph can record what was there but cannot verify it.

Check these details

DetailReason to check
Exact model and seriesSimilar housings can provide different arrangements.
Conductor type and materialSolid, stranded and fine-stranded are distinct selection details.
Cross-section rangeBoth lower and upper limits must suit the conductor.
Connection positions and internal arrangementThese determine which conductors the product joins.
Strip lengthA model-specific instruction, not a universal value.
Electrical and environmental conditionsThe application must remain within the product's limits.
Enclosure and mountingThe complete connection needs suitable protection.

Make sure the packaging and instructions refer to the same product. Buy from an identifiable seller and keep the model information. Do not reuse a damaged, distorted or unidentifiable connector from a box of mixed leftovers.

The connector is one part of the assembly

The installer selects suitable stripping equipment and avoids damaging the conductor. A tool adjusted by diameter uses a different measurement from a conductor specification in mm². The required stripping length comes from the connector instructions.

There must also be adequate space for the connectors and conductors. A lid, suitable entries and any required strain relief belong in the assessment. Do not force extra connectors into a box because its cover can still be closed.

Specific products are available for moisture protection. WAGO describes gelboxes and specifies use within a junction box for 230 V applications. An individual IP-rated item does not by itself establish a complete outdoor or underground installation.

Count the correct types before calculating packs

Create a separate line for each confirmed connector model. The pack calculator deducts suitable stock you already own and rounds the remaining requirement up to complete packs.

For example, suppose an agreed plan requires seven connectors of one exact type and you have no matching stock. If the current pack contains five, you need two packs and will have three spare. This arithmetic does not establish how many connectors a light fitting or socket needs.

Include only the associated parts required by the plan:

  • the specified connector types;
  • suitable boxes, lids and entries;
  • prescribed mounting adaptors or strain relief;
  • appropriate stripping and hand tools for the installer;
  • an approved moisture-protection arrangement where required.

After selecting the model, compare WAGO 221-413 at Elektramat with other checked offers for that exact product. Toolstation lists stripping tools for comparison. Check whether the offered pack is larger than your project requires.

Frequently asked questions

Are all lever connectors interchangeable?

No. Check the model, conductors, size range, internal connection and application conditions.

Can I use one stripping length for every connector?

No. Follow the exact model's instruction. Too much or too little exposed copper can produce an incorrect connection.

Can a connector lie loose above a ceiling?

Have the full connection and its protection assessed. Selecting a suitable connector alone is insufficient.

Unsure about existing connections? Describe the planned alteration to CAS. Do not open a box to take a photograph; start by explaining the work you want done.

Count retail packs

Enter only confirmed compatible, usable stock. Check the actual pack contents; connector positions are not pack quantities. Calculate each variant separately. This is not a cutting plan.

Worked example and formula

17 units required, 2 compatible units owned, 10 per pack: 2 packs, 20 purchased and 5 remaining.

needed = max(0, required − usable owned); packs = ceil(needed / pack size)
